Toward the end of September, all through October, and just a smidge of November, the woods of Plant City are populated with demons, devils, and deranged actors bringing life to the undead at Sir Henry’s Haunted Trail.

Three haunted mazes, a haunted hayride, two escape rooms, food vendors, and more create an eerie oasis just off I-4 about an hour from Orlando.

This year’s mazes include City of Slaughter, Ravensgate Asylum, and Skinwalker’s Hex. The combination of built sets and the natural Florida landscape creates plenty of confusing twists and turns, but that confusion adds to the experience.

Our first stop was City of Slaughter, which combined the story of a deranged butcher and the inhabitants of a cursed town, all eager to keep a piece of you as you pass through. A few victims beg for your help, but they are already too far gone to be saved. A little Sweeney Todd mixed with some damned townsfolk makes this City a fun visit. Beware that car horn though!

Ravensgate Asylum was touted as the big refurbished project this year, and the sets definitely showed some new, well, life. The halls were littered with body parts and filled with patients desperate to escape. While many of the scareactors are volunteers, we were surprised to see a few very young souls performing in one of the rooms. Since families often participate together, they were well looked after by an older “caretaker.” We even heard them giggling as we left, saying, “this is so much fun!” Start them early, I say.

We hitched a ride on the haunted hayride, which was our favorite part of the night. Themed tableaus along the path take you through a werewolf attack, a trick-or-treater takeover, pumpkin spirits, and more. You’ll want to ride this one a few times to catch everything happening around you. Be sure to sit on different sides of the cart for new surprises. I only wish there had been better lighting on some characters, as a few appeared faintly in the shadows when it would have been great to see them in full detail.

Our last stop was among the skinwalkers and the miners they’ve feasted on. The characters in the queue line for this one were a lot of fun, and the creatures crawling on the ground will always get a jump out of me.

Plenty of costumed creatures roam the grounds for fun photos and interactions. Several food options are available, along with adult beverages for liquid courage. Two escape rooms are also offered, though they were not open during our visit.

Parking is free, and tickets are tiered depending on what you want to do. General admission does not include the hayride, while All Access does. VIP gets you to the front of the line one time for each maze and the ride. And if you just can’t get enough, a season pass is also an option.

Proper footwear is required since this is an outdoor event. Backpacks are not allowed, so refer to the haunt’s website for policies. Best of all, this is a scare that cares, benefiting Folds of Honor.
