Calling all witches and muggles. Have you checked out Freeform’s MOTHERLAND: FORT SALEM yet? If not, you should. This week, I’m giving you a double whammy with a recap of both Episode 8 “City Drop” and Episode 9 “Coup”.
In “Citydrop”, the witches come together for their final training exercise at Citydrop but as expected nothing goes as planned. Several devastating secrets come to light, leaving everyone feeling broken and lost. Can they trust anyone? Raelle (Taylor Hickson) finally faces the truth about Scylla (Amalia Holm) being a Spree and decides to confront her about everything. Meanwhile, Tally (Jessica Sutton) and Abigail (Ashley Nicole Williams) face their own struggles and start to question General Alder’s motives who sends them on an unplanned and ruthless mission to stop some of their enemies and risk everyone’s lives including hostages.
In “Coup”, the unit comes closer together after losing another fallen soldier. Abigail takes it the hardest and is faced with giving her a eulogy. She takes this opportunity to reflect on her past decisions and encourages others to come together instead of dwelling on stupid and unrealistic traditions that separates them. Anacostia can see the good in Scylla despite all she’s done and tries to help her and Raelle work things out. Tally discovers new information about Gerit and is let down once again. And finally, we discover how unhinged General Alder truly is.
Both episodes are incredibly intense, packed full of drama, and quite sad. Just when the unit grows stronger, something awful happens that stops their growth and puts everyone on edge. Every time a soldier dies, my heart breaks. They’re so young and this time she truly died for nothing and the blood is on General Alder’s hands. She’s gone mad with power and she needs to be stopped.
Although Raelle may have ended things with Scylla, I know they’re not truly over. They both still love each other and one way or another they will end up back together. The unit will probably find a way to save Scylla, or at least I’m hoping so. Raelle is such a powerful witch and I hate seeing her devastated with pain and sadness. Hopefully, she can channel these emotions into something good.
Meanwhile, I think Abigail is seeing that never everything is black and white in the army. There’s a lot of shady things going on and she’s learning to think for herself and who she can truly trust. Poor Tally has spent all this time trying to hold her unit together, but I think it’s just a matter of time before she breaks. And what the hell, Gerit? Stop messing with her head!
Man, these episodes were intense and had me at the edge of my seat. So much happened and I fear there will be a lot more bloodshed soon. Next week’s episode is called “Witchbomb” and I imagine with everything that General Alder is doing, the witches are going to come together to take her down. Stay tuned for my recap and let us know what you think about this new series thus far!
