'Christmas Spirits' - Creepy Kingdom's Holiday Music Playlist

by Josh Taylor

Not in the mood for Mariah Carey or Bing Crosby? We get it. Neither are we. We don’t want to play some game where we try to avoid “Last Christmas” by Wham! Instead, we just don’t want to hear it at all. That’s why we’ve decided to create a holiday playlist of our own. One that’s a bit creepy! An alternative to the classic Christmas tunes you’ll hear everywhere else. We asked our entire team to collaborate on this project to bring you the best, gloomiest, unmerriest songs we could find. “Christmas Spirits - A Creepy Kingdom Holiday Playlist” is all about celebrating the holidays as if it were a weird extension of Halloween. The playlist is full of unique songs both familiar and (hopefully) new to your ears. Of course, we’ve included some crossover appeal with songs like “Making Christmas” from the Nightmare Before Christmas and even Korn’s version of “Kidnap the Sandy Claws” from the same film. Co-Owner of Creepy Kingdom James H. Carter II included this version because “Danny Elfman's genius in songwriting and composing effortlessly meshes with Korn's low-tuned groove metal, creating a fusion that's nothing short of spectacular.”

Another you may be familiar with is “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” which Hannah K threatened me with “If you don’t include the song on this playlist I will riot.” I didn’t want to take my chances so we did. We also wanted to include some anti-Christmas songs as well. The Matches “December is for Cynics” is a favorite of mine personally (Josh Taylor) because of it’s use of interesting guitar sounds, catchy punk rock hooks, and statement about how the holidays have become so much about spending money rather than spending time together. For those looking for a harder tone, several people on our team nominated the song “Merry Axe-Mas” by Ice Nine Kills. Lauren Cupp stated, “It’s an homage to Silent Night, Deadly Night (the fun B-horror film) and it has a headbanging metal chorus.” This playlist boasts songs from multiple genres and time periods. We had fun piecing it together for you as if we were your goth boyfriend looking to make you a cassette tape of our favorite songs in hopes that you’ll like us and kiss us under the mistletoe this year. I mean…if that’s cool with you of course. (Consent is important kids!) So cozy up to the fireplace, put on that black lipstick, roast whatever nuts you’ve got, and check out our playlist “Christmas Spirits - A Creepy Kingdom Holiday Playlist”.
